ADVICE FOR SALON PROS ENTERING #BEA2021

more than a social media competition

The Beauty Envision Awards aspires to bring the salon professional community together by encouraging stylists to showcase their creativity in all forms. While inspiration can be found all around us, we can’t forget our fellow salon pros are great support systems as well. We spoke with Wella Studio Signature Artist Erik Thrane (@erik.wella) and asked for his advice for salon pros entering BEA 2021. Here’s what he had to say!

q & a with erik thrane

What does this year's inspiration mean to you?

ET: I love that we have a wide variety of inspirational photos as well as inspirational words. I think this opens the possibilities that stylists can create what is unique to them and showcases their individuality. As the entries come in, we can really see the point of view from each stylist.

Where do you draw your own creative concepts from?

ET: I draw many of my concepts from the principles of design and just plain ole color theory. Thinking about how colors bounce off of each other and how they harmonize. I also love looking at my model and seeing a vision of what fits them and drawing on their personality and bone structure to create a holistic end result.

What are your #PROtips for salon pros entering the Beauty Envision Awards for the first time?

ET: Preplanning is everything! Set yourself up for success by creating a timeline. Start from when you want your shoot to be and work backward. This helps break down the process into easier-to-manage steps, rather than trying to take on the whole thing at one time. Getting the logistics out of the way enables you to have more fun and enjoy the creative process.

What can a salon pro expect from Wella Studio Mentorship? What kinds of topics will you cover?

ET: For me, I always need an extra pair of eyes for perspective and editing. This is how I like to coach and guide stylists while preparing for a competition. The stylist creates the vision, and the studio team helps guide the technical process as well as offering the perspective of looking at it from a different lens.

We cover everything! From makeup and wardrobe to how will the model pose to emphasize the look you have created. We will also look at the connection between cut, color, and styling and how do you utilize these to create impact, as well as giving stylist tips on what to watch for when you are on set and how to guide a successful shoot.

Any advice for where artists can find models to work with?

ET: I always recommend going to your local cosmetology school. There are always people interested in beauty and open to the creative process. And you also get to give back and show new talent how amazing our industry is!

What is a look you'd love to see at BEA this year?

ET: The devil is in the details. I love seeing little nuances in creations that I can really say, “Wow, this stylist really took the time and energy to plan and create something to the smallest detail”. Intricate, well-executed looks always grab my attention. I also love seeing each person’s aesthetic come through the photo that represents them.
