q&a with emma hancock

What inspires your dynamic coloring techniques?

EH: My inspiration comes from everywhere. Sometimes it’s a simple photo I see on Instagram – it could be a painting, a sunset, nature. So many things inspire me.

What is your favorite creative color trend at the moment?

EH: My favorite color trend at the moment is “less is more”—sometimes it’s a peekaboo with color, sometimes it’s a soft shadow root. Simplicity is beautiful to me right now. Not a loud scream of color, but a whisper. It might be because I do a lot of intense/over-the-top color daily.

Any #PROtips for up-and-coming salon pros who want to experiment with creative color?

EH: How I started experimenting with creative color was just adding pops of color to start with, and then it evolved into whole heads. So, if you’re scared of playing around with creative colors, that’s where I would encourage you to start. Working with softer tones, even a beautiful rose gold, could make a huge statement. It helps get your feet wet while playing around with different color palettes. Get you a couple of creative clients, and play around and have fun with it.

What is one Wella product you cannot live without when it comes to creating your Beauty Envision Awards entries?

EH: The one Wella product I cannot live without is Blondor!!!! It has been essential in creating every masterpiece I have done.  It’s super versatile/reliable and always delivers the results that I need.

As a 3-time BEA winner, what is your key to success in this competition?

EH: I’m not sure I know the key to success, but what I can tell you is it’s a lot of hard work and determination. Attention to detail is huge. Every little detail matters. Getting out of my own way and overcoming self-doubt was key for me.

Do you have any pointers for artists entering the BEA awards for the first time?

EH: My advice to anyone entering is to try to have fun. Enter everything! You can’t win if you don’t enter. Every shot that Wella has picked was my least favorite. So just goes to show you never know what they are looking for.
